We caught up with Doll Skin drummer Meghan Herring while they have some downtime after Shiprocked & their first European tour, and before they join Warped Tour for its “final full cross country tour.”
RL: How was Europe?
MH: Oh my gosh! It was life changing for me because, when you’re flying over there, it’s like you’re flying over the top of World to get there and then it’s like you’re landing on Mars or something…everything is different, more beautiful. It was a serious culture shock for all of us.
RL: What was your favorite thing about Europe?
MH: It would have to be how old the cities were. Our first date was in Prague, which is in the Czech Republic. It’s like this old, Renaissance New York City. It’s just so pretty, and even as cold as it was just incredible! Also, everywhere had bread, which will eventually catch up to you. But, it was really good bread, so it was worth it!
RL: How many different countries did you go to?
MH: Hmmm, 6 or 7 of them? Let me see if I can name them off the top of my head. Czech Republic, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, and England.
RL: June 16th will be the 1 year anniversary of the release of Manic Pixie Dream Girl. Any plans to celebrate it, with a show maybe?
MH: Actually we don’t. But that’s a good idea! I’ll have to talk to the girls about it.
RL: With it being less than a year ago, I’m assuming there aren’t plans to release any new music soon, but are you working on new material?
MH: Ever since we’ve been home we’ve been writing very heavily. We have tentative plans for an EP…MAYBE, but there are some logistics we have to work out so, we’re definitely not 100% sure. What we’re doing though is writing as much as we possibly can, and kinda letting them chill for a little bit. Then we’ll come back them, and watch them age and grow. In fact, we’re going into a friend’s studio in a few days to do some demos and see how these things sound, and try to approach a different way of writing. Other than that, I would say we are maybe planning on writing an album towards the end of this year, with a release next year very likely.
RL: Who is the funniest person in the band?
MH: I’d say…oh gosh! I’d say the person who cracks me up the most is usually Alex. She says stuff that’s so out of the blue that I’m just “Where do you come up with these things?” She’s great!
RL: If you could resurrect one artist to perform with, who would it be?
MH: That is a great question. Probably, I would love to just sit down and get to know The Rev (drummer and founding member of Avenged Sevenfold). That would be absolutely crazy because he was a big influence on me.
RL: What’s your favorite thing about touring?
MH: Going and seeing new places. Also, when we have random opportunities to step outside of the grind of the tour and do something fun. Like the time we were on our way back from Shiprocked, and we went to Disneyworld and it was so much fun!
RL: On the subject of “tour”, let’s talk about Warped.
MH: Oh, yes! Let’s do that!
RL: Doll Skin is on the entire tour this year, that is exciting!
MH: (Screeching just a bit) Yeah it iiiissss! It’s pretty great!
RL: What is something you like about Warped?
MH: Oh man, I think just the community. Basically, I’m on a tour with a lot of these bands that I would listen to when I was about 10. I listened to all of these great bands that are on the lineup this year, and now I’m going to be on tour with them, and hopefully mingling with them! That, to me is pretty wild! Very excited about it. Underoath is coming on for 3 days in Florida. They’re one of my favorite bands, so I’m excited to follow them around everywhere and stalk them.
RL: What’s a typical day like on Warped?
MH: Basically you wake up around 7 or 8 (strangely early), then you have to go check out what time you’re playing. Go and get breakfast, then set up and get everything out the way, and wait until you play. Last year, we had some pretty early playing times, which actually I prefer. That way we can get everything done and just run around and go see some bands!
RL: Do you have a favorite song to play live?
MH: I always have a really really good time playing Puncha Nazi. I always feel the energy with that one. It feels so good to play it because the girls and I are on the same level for that song. I also love playing “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin, we just added that to our setlist. That one is really fun, because we kinda get to show off a little bit!
RL: That’s about all I’ve got…do you have anything you want to say to fans?
MH: Hello, Hi! I love you, and we’ll see you on Warped Tour!!
